Final Presentations

Presentation Day 1
Island: Costa Rica
One thing i learned from his presentation was that the population growth in Costa Rica is actually decreasing unlike other countries.
Costa Rica is also ranked 50th in the world financially.
One thing i would have liked to learn from the presentation was why there was a shortage of potatoes and onions. I liked this Presentation because he had a good amount of information and he spoke clearly.
Presentation Day 2
Island: Guadeloupe
Something interesting i learned from this presentation was that Guadeloupe was first known as Karakera. Also during slavery, fifty percent of the slave owners income came from bananas. One thing i would like to know was why the island chose to stay under french rule. I liked this  presentation because it had a lot of good visuals.

Presentation Day

Research Proposal Presentation
The research proposal presentations were overall done well in my opinion. Many people had great information, and it seemed that everyone had a good grasp of what their paper was going to be about. I would have changed a couple of things about some students presentations, including mine. For my presentation i would have liked to be more vocal. I believe a lot of presentations needed to be like this. I also think that some people put too much information onto one page, or their bullet points could have been shorter or straight to the point. When it came to visuals i think everyone had enough pictures that represented their island.

Interesting Info

Tree Bark Instrument
This is the Tum Tum drum. I found this instrument very interesting because it is a home made instrument and the way that they make it. It is made from a hollowed out tree bark. They are able to make different sounding drums from different sized tree barks. I also thought that the Steele drum instrument was interesting also because they make it the same way the Tum Tum is made. They use a hollowed out Steele bowl and dent certain parts of it to make different notes. to play both instruments you use a stick to hit certain parts of the drum to make higher and lower notes.

Research

My Research
My research is about how music in Barbados has changed, the way it is recorded and how it is listened to around the world. when i started this research i learned that as technology advances it has a direct correlation with the way we record music nowadays. In the past twenty or so years technology has been advancing at a very rapid pace. A problem i came across during my research was finding information on different recording studios in Barbados. A lot of studios in Barbados are local known and there's not too much information about them online, but i came across a really famous one called Blue Wave Studios. Many different artists from around the world came to record music there.

Culture

Culture
Barbados culture is a mix between west African and British culture. The national language of Barbados is English although they do speak with a dialect called Bajan. The majority of the island is of African decent, but the British influence is so strong because the island was colonized by the British for about 300 years. These 2 cultures influence their food, traditions, celebrations and architecture. A big part of Barbados architectural culture comes from the British. The architecture takes from the Victorian, Georgian, and Jacobean styles. A lot of the buildings take the style of European building but also adapt styles from Africa with the use of verandas and gable roofs.

History
Barbados history starts off with its colonization of the British in 1625 until they received their independence in 1966.
